Court Marriage Procedure in Pakistan: What Actually Happens, Step by Step
A plain walk-through of how court marriage registration works in Karachi — documents, the Nikah Nama, and the mistakes that cause delays.
"Court marriage" in Pakistan doesn't mean a wedding held inside a courtroom — it refers to a marriage solemnised and registered through a Nikah Registrar, with the paperwork structured to be legally unambiguous from day one. Couples usually choose this route when they want a fast, well-documented registration, or when one party's family circumstances make a more conventional process difficult.
What's required before the Nikah
- CNIC copies of both parties and two witnesses from each side
- Proof of age (both parties must be of marriageable age under Pakistani law)
- Affidavits confirming the marriage is free of coercion
- If either party was previously married, proof of divorce or the former spouse's death
The Nikah Nama itself
The Nikah Nama is the legal record of the marriage — it sets out the mehr (dower), any conditions the parties agree to, and the witnesses' signatures. Errors here are the single biggest source of later disputes, particularly around mehr amount and payment terms, so we review the draft with clients before signature rather than after.
Registration
Once signed, the Nikah Registrar submits the marriage for registration with the Union Council. Registered marriages are entered into NADRA's family records, which matters later for anything from a passport application to a maintenance claim.
Where delays usually happen
Most delays trace back to incomplete documentation — a missing divorce decree, witnesses who can't be reached on the day, or a mismatch between CNIC details and other records. Getting the paperwork checked in advance avoids almost all of them.
If one party is overseas
Marriages involving an overseas Pakistani can still be registered, typically through a power of attorney or, in some cases, at a Pakistani mission abroad — the exact route depends on the couple's specific circumstances.
