Trademark Registration in Europe: A Guide for Pakistani Businesses

Pakistani exporters expanding into European markets often start by asking how to register a trademark in a specific country — Germany, or Spain, or Poland. The more useful question is which of Europe's four routes applies, because for most of the continent the answer is a single filing rather than a country-by-country exercise.

The four routes into Europe

1. EU Trade Mark (EUTM) — one application at the EUIPO in Alicante gives a uniform right across all 27 EU member states, through a single procedure with one set of fees and one renewal cycle.
2. Madrid Protocol — file one international application through the Trademarks Registry in Karachi and designate the EU as a bloc, and/or individual European countries. Pakistan has been a Madrid member since 2021.
3. National filings — required for the countries an EUTM does not reach, most importantly the United Kingdom.
4. Benelux (BOIP) — Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg have no national trademark offices at all; the Benelux Office handles all three together.

Every European country, and which route covers it

This table is the short answer for any specific country. "EUTM" means a single EU Trade Mark filing at EUIPO covers it; those countries do not need a separate national application unless you specifically want one.

Filing from Pakistan: the Madrid Protocol route

For a Pakistani business, the practical path into Europe usually runs through Madrid rather than through direct filings in each jurisdiction. A single international application, filed through the Trademarks Registry in Karachi as Office of Origin and based on a Pakistani basic application or registration, can designate the EU alongside the UK, Switzerland, Turkey and other Madrid members — consolidating what would otherwise be several separate national filings into one payment in Swiss francs and one international record. The all-or-nothing risk in an EUTM

The EUTM's greatest strength is also its main risk: because it is a single unitary right, a successful opposition based on an earlier mark in any one member state can defeat the entire application across all 27. A prior Greek or Portuguese registration you have never heard of can block your EU-wide filing. Which route fits your business

If your European market is a single country, a national filing (or Benelux, for those three) may be simpler. If it spans several EU states, the EUTM is almost always more economical than filing separately. If it spans the EU plus the UK, Switzerland or Turkey, a Madrid application designating each is usually the cleanest structure.
