Unlike trademarks, copyright in Pakistan exists automatically the moment an original work — writing, music, software, art, film — is created and fixed in some tangible form. No registration is legally required for protection to exist. That doesn't mean registration is pointless.

Why register anyway

Registration with IPO-Pakistan creates an official, dated public record of authorship, which becomes valuable evidence if ownership is ever disputed or if you need to demonstrate first creation in an infringement case. Without it, proving you created something first can turn into a harder evidentiary fight than it needs to be.

What copyright doesn't cover

Copyright protects the specific expression of an idea, not the underlying idea, method, or concept itself. This distinction matters a great deal in software and business-format disputes, where clients sometimes assume protection extends further than it actually does.

Software specifically

Source code is protected as a literary work under Pakistani copyright law, which matters for businesses commissioning custom software — ownership should be addressed explicitly in the development contract, since default rules don't always favour the party paying for the work.

Enforcement

Where infringement occurs, both civil remedies (injunctions, damages) and, in some cases, criminal proceedings are available, and the registered copyright record substantially strengthens that position.

For International Law Firms

Referral Partnership

We work with law firms outside Pakistan whose clients need trademark protection here. Firms that commit to referring at least 10 trademark filings a year receive their first 5 trademark applications — including official IPO-Pakistan fees — at no cost, while we build the working relationship.
