The single most common European trademark mistake
Before Brexit, an EU Trade Mark covered the United Kingdom along with the other member states. It no longer does. The UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) is now an entirely separate registry from the EUIPO, and a EUTM filed today confers no rights whatsoever in Britain. Businesses that assume "we have an EU trademark, so Europe is covered" are, in practice, unprotected in one of Europe's largest consumer markets.
What UK protection now requires
A separate application to the UKIPO, examined under UK law on its own timeline, with its own opposition period and its own renewal cycle. It is a parallel process to the EUTM, not an extension of it — separate fees, separate deadlines to diarise, and separate enforcement.
